Unofficial reflections — offered in good faith (and with a grain of salt)
I want to be explicit: it’s spring break, I don’t want to be writing updates, so you all are getting a (slightly) abbreviation version. The whole meeting lasted six minutes.
The Board held a special meeting tonight and voted unanimously to appoint the Interim Director as the permanent School Director, effective at the end of the current school year.
The meeting lasted approximately six minutes. There was no discussion item on the agenda, no presentation from the finalist, and no Q&A. The vote was listed before public comment — and the Board Chair nearly moved to adjourn without opening public comment at all. The finalist herself had to remind the board it was on the agenda.
The motion also authorized the Board Chair to negotiate and sign the employment agreement on behalf of the board. The full board will not vote on contract terms.
Here is the timeline:
The Board designated a sole finalist on or around March 16. Colorado law requires at least 14 days of public notice before the position can be filled. Tonight's meeting — held on the second day of spring break, with roughly one day's public notice — fell at the earliest date permitted by statute.
During those 14 days, there was no community forum, no finalist presentation, and no structured opportunity for families to engage with the candidate or the decision. The Board's only public reference to the process came at the March 25 regular meeting, when the Board Chair described the 14-day notice period as a "cooling off period."
The Board met the letter of the law.
Whether the spirit of the law was met — whether a process designed for meaningful community input actually provided any — is a question families can answer for themselves.
We wish the new School Director well and hope this next chapter brings the kind of transparent, accountable leadership the school needs. I think the community is ready to support it.
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your spring break.
